Design Fiction Process
Material Futures : The design fiction process
Material futures is a design fiction narrative created as a part of my doctoral studies. After exploring several design fiction approaches such as the extrapolation factory, near future labs, this process for this work was constructed to suit the context and subject of ownership rituals and services in Oslo, Norway, in the year 2025.
View the narrative
"Future does not exist in a vacuum, inherent in every potential future are its roots in the past and the present societal, economic and technological conditions."
- The extrapolation factory operation manual
Causal Layered Analysis
Going through several future trend reports and viewing it in relation to the current practices of everyday things (insights from my field study), I designed several diegetic prototypes situated in the near future. I constructed news reporting and conversations based narratives as a means of representation of a probable timeline.

World building using "Things from the future" Game
Using divergent approach for unconstrained ideation, I used "
Things from the future
" game-play, to create possible scenarios combining different future trends.
Short stories about the future
Building a set small fiction narrative representing every day of 2025 concerning ownership and lifestyles.
Making it real
I used the forms of topical news, advertisements, and conversation between a couple, to suspend the disbelief and for the audience to have a short but a tangible firsthand experience.
