Redesigning the NetScout platform

NetScout has one of the leading network data analytics platform. They wanted to redesign it into a one-stop, streamlined, and integrated platform for their customers. I steered this two-year long design partnership working directly with clients, delivering a completely overhauled platform experience.

As the senior designer on this project, I led the design team of three designers to create detailed wireframes, mapping the information architecture and establishing a design language to logically link the different platform modules.

Initially a 6 month project, the project expanded to include the redesign of all six platform modules and the creation of a central hub for coordination across all application modules over the next two years.

IMPACT

Initially thought of as a 6 month one-off project, the engagement went on to become the largest account for our consultancy.

Netscout

As a result of an overwhelmingly positive response from the launch of the first redesigned module, NetScout approved a complete redesign of the platform. Through a close collaboration with the client's team, we redesigned a complex legacy system, streamlining the information flow and presentation, and creating a scalable, flexible, and consistent integrated business intelligence platform.

About the platform

Service Assurance platform with ASI technology provided real-time visibility of all services and their components while proactively safeguarding service availability and performance. This platform provides a network performance management solution that provides real-time monitoring, analytics, and insights into network and application performance. Their platform offers a comprehensive view of network performance, enabling IT professionals to identify and resolve issues before end-users are impacted.

Problem space

The existing solution had issues including information redundancy, inconsistent interface and challenging learning curve despite using cutting-edge technology.

In order to provide efficient analytics to a diverse set of organizations, it was essential to understand each module's underlying architecture, role, and dependencies.

Deconstructing and understanding the product architecture

We broke down enterprise documentation and conducted activity-based sessions with product managers to create personas and mind maps. During these initial sessions, product architecture discussions began.

Information architecture

The biggest challenge was keeping all the different product owners on board with the changes. Working with back-end system architects, we streamlined the information flow and presentation across the product.

Storyboards and Detailed Designs

We broke down the design cycle into smaller self-contained phases and used wireframe storyboards to provide detailed new designs that were refined after sign-off. We also created interaction patterns for consistency across the product.

It became crucial to create visual and interaction consistency across multiple modules.

We established a common pattern by auditing modules and establishing a scaleable, repeateable interaction and visual pattern. Design and development collaborated to produce a common UI guideline document and a style guide. Design systems were emerging in 2014. We called it the consistency project then :)
